‘The Great Big Green Week is the UK’s biggest ever celebration of community action to tackle climate change and protect nature.’
This year, The Great Big Green Week is being held between the 8th – 16th of June and is the perfect opportunity to join in with your community to do something good for the environment.
We are holding three events, in collaboration with Havant Borough Council, to mark The Great Big Green Week including a beach clean, a kid’s upcycling workshop and sessions where you can join us to make Borrow Bags for the local community.
The first event is a beach clean in Emsworth. The 8th of June is also World Ocean Day, so how better to mark it than to get down to the beach and give it a good tidy! We will be meeting at 10am, in the car park at the end of South Street in Emsworth, just on the shore opposite 36 On the Quay, and we expect to be finished by midday. We’d love for as many people to get involved as possible, and you can sign up FREE by clicking HERE.
On the 12th of June, we are running our first Kids Upcycling Workshop! Kids aged 4-16 years are welcome to join us, 4pm – 5pm, at the Emsworth Sports & Social Club to try some upcycling. You can bring a piece of your clothing to amend and upcycle but if you don’t have anything to use, all materials will be provided.
Some of the activities you could try include:
1. Turn a t-shirt into a tassel top
2. Make a fabric necklace and braided wristbands
3. Use acrylic fabric markers to create a new design
4. Create a piece of fabric art in a frame
5. Make a tie necklace
6. Make ‘no sew’ bows from fabric
7. Create a cover-up shawl, no sewing required
8. Decorate a jar, dish, planter vase using glue, paint and decorations

Our final event is on the 13th of June, and is an opportunity to come and join us to make some Borrow Bags!
Borrow bags are made up by local sewing volunteers and given to shops that have signed up for the scheme so shoppers can borrow and bring them back when they remember. They are made from reclaimed material – from old curtains to offcuts of sail fabric, saving it from landfill and repurposing it to become something useful.
We are running 2 sessions; one in the morning from 10am – midday, and one in the afternoon from 1pm – 3pm. Please select whether you will be attending the morning or afternoon session (or both) when you register.
The team from the charity will provide all the fabric, sewing machines and templates. But we need volunteers to sew, cut out patterns and more! No sewing experience is necessary. Can you help? Tea and biscuits and friendly chat are included!
